The Multiple Sclerosis Walks

There are several large groups seeking to promote awareness of multiple sclerosis, or MS, and to raise money for research and other valuable educational tools. One of these groups, the National MS Society, hosts several large events each year that together help to raise millions of dollars to fight MS and raise awareness of the disease in people who might ordinarily not know much about it.

The Events

Of course one of the most visible events is the MS Walk. In one year alone, the MS Walks –walks usually average about 5K, or 3.1 miles—raised over 45 million dollars. Hundreds of thousands of people walk across the country to generate awareness of the programs and events sponsored by the National MS Society each year. The money raised is donated by individuals and groups who wish to fund the literature, support groups, and educational programs offered by the National MS Society. Besides the 5K walks, the organization also hosts the MS Challenge Walk. This walk is held at various locations across the country and involves participants walking 50 miles over a three day period, from one city to another. In the past, thousands of walkers have participated and raised over seven million dollars in a single year. For walkers looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, the 5K walks sponsored by the National MS Society also offer the popular “pooch parades” in which walkers can bring their dogs to walk and enjoy informational booths and canine confections along the way.

For cyclists looking to raise awareness of MS, there is the MS Bike Tour. In past years, over 100,000 cyclists have competed and raised over 47.6 million dollars in one year alone. The MS Bike Tour is a popular and unique way to raise money for MS research while enjoying some of the country’s most beautiful country side. For people looking to experience some team spirit, they can form a group to participate in any of these events. Cycling or walking in a group often provides great support and helps make the challenges of the event seem a bit easier and more doable.

Certainly for people looking to participate in a fun, enjoyable event while raising money for a good cause, the MS Walks and Bike Tour are the way to go. People participating in the walks can do what some MS patients cannot, walk or cycle and put one foot in front of the other.
